Artist Catherine Zeidler creates concrete statuary
sold by fine retailers like the Smithsonian Institute in
Washington D.C.; Winterthur Museum and Gardens in Wilmington,
Del.; the University Museum in Philadelphia, Pa.; and the
Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pa.
Considered one of the most excellent manufactured products
of its type, her work has a wide scope, ranging from
three-dimensional mythological figures to religious icons and
classic Greco-Roman designs. Catherine's numerous pieces also
include original oil paintings, landscaping — which she calls
“organic sculpture” — and custom jewelry design using vintage
and imported glass beads.
Her statuary is custom cast for the Zeidler Gallery of
Philadelphia, and has been distributed nationwide for more
than 25 years through catalog sales and in gift shops, antique
stores and garden centers.
Catherine uses a fine-grained concrete mix that reproduces
details well. “It also translates into a variety of surfaces,”
she says, “from wood to weathered stone.”
Trained as a fine artist, Catherine studied painting and
sculpting at the Philadelphia College of Art. After being
drawn to the use of concrete as a medium, she perfected her
technique working with artist and teacher Leo Russell during
the 1970s. She founded Zeidlercast Inc. in 1986.
Ms. Zeidler hails from a long line of artists and artisans.
Her father, Lawrence Zeidler; brother, John Zeidler; mother
Elisabeth Zeidler; grandmother, Emily Reed; and
great-grandmother, L. L. Tanzey; are known for their expertise
and exceptional work as designers, illustrators, fine artists,
American craftsmen and luthiers (stringed-instrument
builders).
